What is Microblading?
Microblading is a type of semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing technique that differs from traditional tattoos. Instead of a tattoo gun, microblading employs a specialized tool with a cluster of fine, almost invisible needles arranged in a blade shape. This tool is used to meticulously create strokes resembling individual brow hairs, while simultaneously implanting pigment into the skin. The outcome? Natural-looking eyebrow hairs that remain intact for a year or even longer without fading or washing off.
Microblading, although categorized as a form of tattooing, differs significantly from traditional permanent tattoos. The dissimilarities extend beyond the type of pigments used, as microblading employs smaller pigment particles rather than concentrated tattoo ink. Additionally, the application process sets microblading apart. Unlike traditional tattoos that penetrate the deeper layers of the skin for permanent results, microblading involves superficially depositing the pigment on the skin’s surface. As a result, the pigmentation gradually fades over time as it is metabolized by the body.
The choice of pigments and the superficial application technique contribute to the distinctive characteristics of microblading. The resulting “tattoo” appears soft and subtle, unlike the opaque and vibrant nature of traditional tattoos. Moreover, the pigment on the eyebrows may lighten a shade or two over time, whereas fading traditional tattoos can develop a blue-green hue along the edges.
The suitability of an individual for microblading is not solely determined by the amount of natural brow hair they possess, but rather by their skin type. Factors such as skin reactivity, sensitivity, the presence of keratosis pilaris on the forehead, or experiencing frequent breakouts or cystic acne around the brow area are crucial considerations.
If you have highly reactive or sensitive skin, or if you currently have skin conditions that may be exacerbated by inflammation, you may not be an ideal candidate for microblading at the moment. The initial inflammatory response caused by microblading can impact the healing process of the tattoo and potentially worsen existing skin conditions. Additionally, if your skin tends to be excessively oily, microblading may result in a faster fading of the pigment, leading to a shorter lifespan of the microbladed brows.
Microblading is beneficial for individuals with thin or sparse brows as it can provide them with definition and fullness. However, it’s important to note that the results may not appear as natural as someone who already has hair behind the drawn-on strokes. To address this, a brow artist can incorporate shading behind the hair-like strokes to minimize the visibility of empty spaces between them.
For those who already have some eyebrow hair and desire a subtle fill-in or enhancement to their natural brows, microblading can achieve a very natural look. However, if someone already has a significant amount of natural eyebrow hair, microblading may not be suitable as it primarily focuses on enhancing fullness rather than shaping or grooming the brows. To achieve a brushed-up or groomed appearance, other techniques like using a brow gel or undergoing brow lamination would be more appropriate.
The experience of pain during microblading can vary from person to person, as it depends on individual pain tolerance. However, to minimize any discomfort, a numbing gel will be applied by your brow artist before the procedure begins. In addition, they may apply additional layers of gel between each pass to further alleviate any potential discomfort.
How Long Does Microblading Last?
The longevity of microblading can range from one to three years, with factors such as skin type influencing the fading process (typically, oilier skin types experience faster fading). Within one year, you may notice some fading, but your microblading will not completely disappear. However, after three years, it is likely that your microblading will become significantly less noticeable. To maintain the fresh appearance of your microbladed brows over time, regular touch-ups every 12-18 months are recommended.
How Do I Prepare For A Microblading Appointment?
Prior to your microblading appointment, it is advisable to contact Rich Bich Med Spa and inquire about our specific preparation instructions, as guidelines can vary among different artists. For instance, we request clients to refrain from grooming their brows for 6-8 weeks to allow for a complete reshaping process in conjunction with microblading. Additionally, it is recommended to discontinue the use of retinol, chemical exfoliants, and physical exfoliators at least one week before the microblading session to prevent heightened skin sensitivity.
How Long Do Microbladed Brows Take To Heal?
The complete healing process of microbladed brows typically takes around a month, but it’s crucial to note that the quality of healing largely depends on your adherence to the aftercare instructions provided by your artist. It is common to experience redness, swelling, and scabbing within the initial 5-7 days following microblading. If you encounter these symptoms, there is no need for alarm. However, it is important to resist the temptation to pick at the scabs as doing so can lead to potential infections and prolonged healing.
It’s important to avoid heavy sweating, getting your eyebrows wet, or prolonged sun exposure for seven days after the microblading procedure. This means it’s a good idea to temporarily pause your workout routine during this time. However, if you’re a professional athlete and need to work out, applying antibiotic ointment to your brows before exercising to protect the pigment and maintain cleanliness by preventing bacterial contamination.
Applying antibacterial ointment to the eyebrows every two hours within the first 24 hours. Additionally, it is recommended to apply a thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor in the morning and evening for a week to keep the area moisturized and safeguarded. It’s crucial to refrain from using any products containing acids or retinoids until your brows have fully healed, as these substances can cause the pigments to fade.
