What is Eyebrow Lamination?
Brow lamination, a semi-permanent treatment, can be likened to a perm for your eyebrows. It involves a four-step process that relaxes the brow hair, allowing for the manipulation of its direction to create the appearance of a fuller brow shape. By undergoing a single session of eyebrow lamination, even sparse natural brows can instantly achieve a fluffier and more voluminous look.
Brow lamination provides similar styling benefits to your brow hairs as a perm or keratin treatment does for the hair on your head. During the process, the brow hair is permed and set into a new position, creating the appearance of fuller and more defined brows.
The primary advantage of laminated brows is the enhanced appearance they provide. When performed correctly, laminated brows offer a more aesthetically pleasing shape, with increased fullness and lift. Additionally, during the lamination process, it is possible to reshape the brows slightly, such as adjusting the arch or tail, to achieve the desired shape.
Unlike other brow treatments like microblading, brow lamination is non-invasive and temporary, making it an appealing option for individuals who prefer not to commit to more permanent brow services.
Not only do laminated brows look fantastic, but they are also easier to manage. The hairs, even if previously unruly, become more manageable in their smoothed shape. They appear vertically aligned, giving the impression of being expertly brushed up and perfectly set in place.
A significant selling point of brow lamination is its durability of up to eight weeks. This eliminates the need for daily frantic brow brushing and gel setting, allowing for a more low-maintenance daily routine.
To ensure a smooth and safe experience during your appointment, it is essential to come prepared. Prior to your brow lamination appointment, it is recommended to avoid using retinol, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), and other exfoliating skincare products for at least 48 hours. These products can react with the chemical lamination solution, potentially causing an unwanted skin reaction. Additionally, brow technicians advise against tweezing, threading, or waxing your brows before the appointment.
If you have a history of ultra-sensitive skin or previous reactions to hair dye, it is wise to request a patch test before your lamination appointment. While not always required, a patch test can help determine if you have any allergies to the solution used during the process. Allergies may not be apparent until the solution is applied to your eyebrows, so it is important to take this precautionary step.
Inform your brow technician if you have any skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema, if you have experienced sensitivity to certain chemicals in the past, if you have any eye conditions, or if you currently have sunburn. Your technician will assess these factors and determine if it is safe to proceed with the treatment, prioritizing your well-being and safety.
Ready to have your brows laminated? Here’s what you can expect during the process:
Step 1:
You will be guided to a comfortable reclined seat where your brow technician will start by cleansing the brow area to ensure it’s free from any makeup, oils, or bacteria. Then, they will apply a relax cream that reacts with the disulphide bonds in your brows. These bonds hold the protein (keratin) chains in your hair together. The relax cream softens the hairs, making them flexible for shaping. In some cases, the technician may use plastic wrap to expedite this process.
Step 2:
After allowing the relax cream to process for a few minutes (the duration may vary based on hair thickness), it is removed, and a setting cream is applied. This cream, known as a “neutralizer,” “reform,” or “setting” cream, sets the hair into its new shape by reforming the hair and its keratin chains. The setting cream is left for a few more minutes, and your technician will use a spoolie to brush the hairs into place.
Step 3:
Once the brows are set, some technicians may choose to tweeze any stray hairs. However, waxing is generally not recommended immediately after the lamination process. The ingredients in the lamination solution can open up the hair follicles and pores around the brow area, making the skin more delicate and susceptible to ripping or breaking.
It’s also advised to avoid cutting the hairs unless they are excessively long and noticeably out of place. Cutting the hairs can result in a less desirable “electrocuted” appearance, rather than the desired fluffy look of a well-done brow lamination.
Step 4:
To complete the process, your technician may apply a hydrating essence and a keratin conditioner treatment. These products help keep the brows moisturized and nourished. Some technicians may also provide these products for you to take home and continue the aftercare routine.
Following these steps, you should have beautifully laminated brows that are shaped and set to enhance your overall look.
Proper aftercare is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your brow lamination results. By following the recommended steps, you can expect your lamination to last between four to six weeks. Here’s what you need to know:
Immediately after the process, it’s essential to refrain from exposing your brows to steam, water, makeup, and skincare products for the first 24 hours.
Once the initial 24-hour period is over incorporating a daily deep conditioner and using castor oil three weeks after lamination to stimulate new hair growth. To keep your brows hydrated, applying a hydrating oil containing vitamin E nightly for a minimum of seven weeks following your lamination. Effective options include castor oil, avocado oil, and argan oil.
To ensure optimal results, avoiding prescription retinoids for at least two weeks after the brow lamination treatment. It is also important to steer clear of medical-grade chemical peels and microblading for one month before your appointment. The need to avoid any chemical treatments on your brows before lamination, ensuring at least two weeks have passed since your last brow tint and 6-8 weeks since your last brow lamination.
By adhering to these aftercare guidelines, you can maintain your beautifully laminated brows and prolong their effects.
The duration of brow lamination typically ranges from four to six weeks. During this time, your hair gradually regains its natural bend and curve. However, the longevity of the results depends on your aftercare routine, as well as the unique texture and thickness of your hair. The effects can even last up to seven weeks, although individual experiences may vary.
Once the six-week period is over, it is recommended to schedule a new eyebrow lamination session to maintain the desired shape. It’s important to avoid going for lamination too frequently as it can be detrimental to both your eyebrow hairs and the delicate skin around your eyes. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t opt for other brow treatments like tinting or shaping if the need arises in the interim. Consult with your brow artist as they will be knowledgeable about the appropriate course of action.
